About Rachel Gray
About me
I specialise in Trauma, Abuse, PTSD, Stress and Anxiety, Phobia and Panic, Eating Disorders, Bereavement, Self Esteem and Depression; although, I am comfortable with most issues you may bring. I have 19 years counselling experience, and use a range of therapies to suit you. I offer long and shorter term therapy and work with both men and women.
I describe myself as an integrative embodied relational therapist, which encompasses my original training called the ’Relational Model’, further trainings in Somatic Trauma therapy and EMDR. I also bring in EFT, a gentle energy therapy for trauma, stress and phobia, which can be ’taken home’ as a self help tool. I am trained in CBT, and this can be appropriate for stress, anxiety, and also issues with food.I also bring in creative therapies which can be helpful if words are so hard to voice. More recently I have become interested in Eco-therapy and sessions can be held outdoors, where we walk, or be seated, in woodland/ or similar.
Trauma and Abuse
I have 20 years experience working in Trauma and Abuse. I counselled for 12 years with a Sheffield Rape and Sexual Counselling Service. I am experienced in working with PTSD, including dissociation and attachment disorders. I also worked for a domestic abuse service for 10 years. I bring in Somatic trauma, EMDR, EFT, creative therapies and mindfulness, to help you talk about issues, or how to concentrate on how your life is affected now; it might be that you find it difficult to ’label’ your experience/s in this way and that is part of what we might work through, as well issues such as flashbacks, nightmares, and interpersonal issues.
Trauma following Road traffic & ‘Life Threatening’ incidents
After a road accident, or other ‘threatening experiences’ such as assault, often people are left with feelings of anxiety, panic, tearfulness, irritability and fearfulness. You can suffer from sleeping difficulties (including nightmares), constant alertness and re-living the accident. These effects can remain for some time after the accident, and can lead to further problems of disconnecting from others. There can be a sense that ‘you are not the same person’. The impact of the trauma can be worked through, by talking through the accident, If difficulties persist, this can lead to post traumatic stress (and later PTSD): where you can feel overwhelmed by feelings, and feel under constant ‘threat’, and be easily triggered by ay be a reminder of the accident. Here, somatic trauma ‘techniques’ and EMDR can be particularly helpful.
Eating Disorders and Obesity,
I am a Master Practitioner in eating disorders and obesity, having trained with the National Centre for Eating Disorders in London. I aim to help you through the fear and with issues connected with food related problems. I aim to motivate and inspire you, support and hold you through this process of change, and work through issues which have led to the problem, and those that maintain the problem (some you may know, others may come to your attention when we work together). Issues may include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, compulsive eating, orthorexia, EDNOS. You may feel that your relationship with food is problematic and needs attention as it is connected to other issues. I also offer support for family, friends, and other carers.
Self Harm and other Coping Strategies
I am experienced in issues of self harm and in working with crisis, suicidal feelings and also with issues you might feel difficult to express. I also work with young people. Many experience problems with alcohol and drug issues, and other coping strategies which began has helpful ways to deal with life issues.
Bereavement
Grief and loss can be a consequence of bereavement, loss of a relationship, job or important friendship, or if someone close to you is imprisoned. I am experienced in sudden and traumatic loss, and those bereaved through suicide. I worked for Cruse Bereavement Care when I first began as a therapist.
Pregnancy and Fertility
For some, the prospect of pregnancy can be daunting and the emotions overwhelming. If might be you’re finding being pregnant difficult or if, after having your baby, you may be suffering from pre or post natal anxiety or depression. An unwanted pregnancy or unexpected miscarriage creates considerable distress. Stress and anxiety in conceiving and dealing with fertility issues can be unbearable, and may increase pressure on relationships.
Workplace
I continue to work with a National bus company since 2004 with their employees. This work includes any life issues, but in particular, road traffic incidents (which may or may not include fatality) assault, anger, workplace stress.
Life Issues
It might be that you experience a sense of loneliness, or need to discover where to go next in life. Counselling and psychotherapy can be a positive experience helping you to rediscover you, your innate ability to heal yourself, and connect to your creativity or parts of yourself that are waiting to come back to the fore.

Further Information
I also have a therapeutic massage practice, which has encouraged my interest in the MInd-Body connection, and this can be helpful if you are not ready to talk through issues, or have body related issues. In particular massage can be helpful for the stressful nature of eating disorders and their body connection, and sexual abuse where there are issues of touch. Massage can be clothed, or unclothed, can involve working with body boundary, and safe touch work.
